Edit images in the article editor

Hover over any image in the article editor and click Edit to open the Edit Image modal. From there you can crop the image or add annotations such as arrows, step markers, highlights, and pixelation.

Supported formats

The image editor supports PNG, JPEG, and WebP images. GIF images cannot be edited; if an image is a GIF, the Edit button does not appear.

Open the editor

  1. Hover over an image inside the article editor.

  2. Click the Edit button that appears.

  3. The Edit Image modal opens with the toolbar at the top.

Toolbar tools

The toolbar contains the following tools:

  • Crop — select an area of the image to keep

  • Arrow — draw arrows pointing to elements

  • Step — add numbered step markers

  • Highlight — highlight areas of the image

  • Pixelate — pixelate sensitive areas

  • Undo — step back through changes

  • Redo — reapply a change you undid

Crop an image

  1. Click Crop in the toolbar.

  2. Adjust the crop area on the image.

  3. Click Finish Crop to apply the crop, or click Reset to discard it and start over.

Add annotations

Select an annotation tool from the toolbar, then use the footer controls to tune its appearance:

  • Select annotation color — choose a color for the annotation

  • Select thickness — set the stroke width

  • Arrow head style — choose Standard or Open

  • Step formatting — choose 1 2 3, A B C, a b c, or I II III

Click Revert original to remove all annotations and restore the original image.

Save or cancel

When you are finished, click Save to apply the changes to the article image. Click Cancel to close the modal without saving. If a save error occurs, click Retry.

Edit screenshots after insertion

After inserting a screenshot (whether from Automate screenshots in your docs or a manual upload), you can open it in the editor to crop or add annotations.
