Use the side panel and popup

The Ferndesk side panel gives you Fern chat, article search, and your recent tasks from any webpage, and the extension popup controls where Fern is active.

Open the side panel

You can open the side panel three ways; pick whichever suits the moment.

  • Keyboard: press Alt+F (⌥F on Mac) from any webpage.

  • Toolbar: click the Ferndesk icon in your Chrome toolbar.

  • Context menu: select text on a page, right-click, and choose Send to Fern. The side panel opens with your selected text in the chat input.

Press Alt+Shift+F (⌥⇧F on Mac) to open Fern's article search directly.

What the side panel does

The side panel shows a greeting, conversation starters, article search, and your recent tasks. The composer accepts images, video, and documents.

In the search dialog, press Enter to attach an article to the conversation, copy its link with ⌘C or the hover button, and open it with Command/Ctrl+Enter.

Control Fern from the popup

The extension popup shows the workspace you are signed in to, the keyboard shortcuts, and a switch that turns Fern on or off for the current site. With Fern off for a site, nothing is added to that site. An Ask Fern button opens the side panel.

The popup, side panel, and popover refresh automatically when you sign in or out of Ferndesk.
